Ben, that is AWESOME! I love the way it came out. Monster cross, or whatever you want to call it, that is one sweet mo-sheen!
Granny gear shifting problems? Looks like there may be interference wit the big tire back ther.
There are no issues there at all. Even with the narrower BB I'll be installing, the tire will hit the frame before the der.
Ben, that is simply beautiful. I love it. Great job and have fun.
how much clearance @ the fork crown? looks tight!
Clearance is about 4mm, not mud clearance, but enough for how I'll ride it. I will probably run a front Crossmark, though I'll wear out the XR first. Thanks Jason! Long time no see. Monstercross Leb sometime?
Sweet looking bike. What size tires are you running? I'm not sure I want to jump on the 650b bandwagon as I have too many 700c wheels that I could use on a new build. Looks like there is plenty of clearance for 700x35 tires with fenders. Have you had any issues with BB height and handling using 700c wheels?
The BB height of the bike with 700X35c tires will be unchanged from the bike with 650bX52mm tires. In other words, it'll be fine. The BB height with these tires is about 12.2"s, just fine for a MTB, a little tall for the road, all in all, a nice mix. There it plenty of clearance for 32-45c tires and fenders with 700c wheels.
12.2? That seems really high to my roadie perspective. My Waterford 'cross frame with 32mm Paselas measures only 11.13 inches and my Pegoretti with 25mm Michelins is 10.25.Did you measure 12,2 inches with monster tires on the bike as pictured?
Yes, that is the BB height with 2.2" MTB tires. That is about what I consider "right" for a rigid off road 29er. BB height with large 35c cross tires is right about 11.3"s , so right in there. That is what the bike was designed around. I like the handling of the bike with the larger tires a lot, and I won't be changing them for gravel. I love the versatility, and the comfort provided. The extra momentum carried in the heavier tires alleviates any unstable feelings that a tall bike like this might have otherwise.
This may be a stupid question, so be warned. On the canti version of this bike, do you know if it'd be possible to run 700c cross wheels/tires? I'm not sure if there's enough adjustability/reach in any canti brakes to make that happen.
Oh, and what handlebar is that?
On the canti bike, to be able to run at largest 700x 35x tires, you would have to use Paul Comp adjustable V brakes or SDG V brakes. Canti's will not be able to make up the difference. The bars are Bontrager Race Lite VR bars in 44cm.
